Dear Parents and Guardians,
The School Year 2015 – 2016 has come to an end and what a year it has been. With the re-introduction of the Neighborhood School system, Miguel Hidalgo School had 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade students walking to school with their older siblings in the 4th, 5th and 6th grade. We had not seen this in over 30 years. Back To School Night, Open House and school assemblies were truly a family affair. We are looking forward to the 2016 – 2017 school year.
Miguel Hidalgo School Staff will be working diligently to present the Common Core Standards in English Language Arts and Math to our students in alignment with the Brawley Elementary School District’s Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP). As the Principal, I have worked with District staff to assure that all of our students be provided access to fully credentialed teachers and instructional materials aligned with the Common Core State Standards. Along with the Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts and Math, Miguel Hidalgo School Staff will also be implementing the Next Generation Science Standards, English Language Development with our English Learners, History Social Science, Visual and Performing Arts, Health Education and Physical Education State Standards. Students will find themselves diving into Science and Technology through the comprehensive STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Education Curriculum. Teachers will also incorporate Art into this curriculum.
Miguel Hidalgo School has a goal of having our students and staff utilize technology on a daily basis, and staff will be collaborating with each other discussing effective practices for implementing technology into the classroom and every day lessons. Students will leave Miguel Hidalgo School not only literate in academic areas, but also in technology. Miguel Hidalgo School is committed to having all of our students become lifelong learners, preparing them for college, and their careers of choice in the future.
Student Attendance will be an area of focus during the 2016 – 2017 school year. Attendance is an important factor for student engagement; student engagement is a lead factor in student success. The Vice-Principal, Mrs. Samra, and I will be working together to monitor student attendance. There will be monthly, trimester and end-of-the-year perfect attendance awards and activities for students with perfect attendance. The importance of attendance will emphasize and encourage all of our students to set a goal for perfect attendance. Mrs. Samra and I will also be working with Mrs. Barbosa, the District Student Attendance Officer, to assist parents who may have difficulty with their children attending school regularly.
Miguel Hidalgo School administration and staff is committed to providing a safe and positive environment for student learning. During the 2016 – 2017 school year, administration and staff will emphasize to students that Miguel Hidalgo School is a “No Bullying Zone” and that we will not tolerate Bullying in any form. Students will be encouraged and supported to report acts of intimidation and/or harassment. The administration will keep record of given reports, address student behavior, and document incidents of bullying. Students who repeatedly intimidate and/or harass other students will be disciplined for bullying following the School Discipline Plan. Parents are also encouraged to report incidents of intimidation and harassment. The school will be implementing the “Harper for Kids” youth character development program based on legendary UCLA Coach John Wooden’s “Pyramid of Success.” The program will teach students essential character traits that can help them achieve their personal best in life.
Miguel Hidalgo School is a Family Friendly School and Parents are welcomed and encouraged to participate in their children’s education. Parents are asked to become engaged in their children’s education through various channels. I invite parents to participate in the School Site Council (SSC), Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), English Learners Advisory Committee (ELAC), as well as to volunteer here at Miguel Hidalgo School. Parents are encouraged to establish daily family routines at home supporting academic success and to monitor their children’s out of school activities. Miguel Hidalgo School will once again provide the opportunity for students to participate in the After School Education and Safety (ASES) Program. The ASES program provides a safe environment for students afterschool where they can receive help with their homework as well as participate in extended activities. Students in the ASES Program will also participate in The Rainforest Art/Science Project, Journalism, Photography, STEM activities, SPARKS P.E. Activities, and music for the ASES Program this year.
Miguel Hidalgo School has a tradition of strong academics, and I am looking forward to working with the great staff of our school, the encouraging parents of our students, and the supporting members of our community to do our best to provide the students of Miguel Hidalgo School a rock-solid education.
